IOS 14, macOS Big Sur, Safari to give us ‘No, thanks!’ option for ad tracking At WWDC, Apple promised to double down on data protection in its upcoming iOS 14, macOS Big Sur, and Safari.
A previous incompatibility between Apple’s macOS Big Sur and Sophos Endpoint Security has been resolved. Community members will now be able to update their computers to Big Sur.
Apple macOS 11 was released yesterday November 12th, 2020. This new macOS release is not compatible with UArizona’s primary endpoint protection software: Sophos. This only affects Apple computers and not iPhones, iPads, or Apple Watches. Therefore, we are not recommending updating to macOS 11 Big Sur until the Sophos becomes compatible. For anyone who does update their College computer, you will also need to install the newest version of Sophos. To do that, please follow these steps:
- Remove the old version:
- Go to the Sophos Application folder and select “Remove Sophos Endpoint Security”.
- When prompted, enter your username and password.
- Install the new version from Software Center.

The UArizona Information Security Office is recommending that faculty and staff using Apple computers for work not upgrade to the newest version of macOS, Big Sur, released this week.
MacOS 11 Big Sur is not compatible with UArizona’s primary endpoint protection software, Sophos, and may make you vulnerable to weakened security of your personal data.
This security recommendation only affects Apple computers and not iPhones, iPads or Apple Watches.

You may or may not have automatic download and installation selected on your Apple computer. You are encouraged to review the settings to avoid an unintentional update of the macOS 11 Big Sur. Please review your settings by taking the steps detailed on this webpage.
