Devotion is a singleplayerfirst-personadventure and puzzle game.

It was released as Huan Yuan Devotion (Simplified Chinese: 还愿 Devotion, Traditional Chinese: 還願 Devotion, Japanese: 還願 Devotion) in Asia on February 19, 2019. Shortly after release, a placeholder asset with unintended political connotations left in the release version of the game led to heavy criticism from Chinese audiences before it was delisted from Steam China on February 23, 2019.[2] Red Candle Games issued an official apology for their 'awfully unprofessional mistake' and delisted the game internationally on February 25, 2019 citing technical issues.[3]
Red Candle Games offered a Taiwan-exclusive physical Limited Edition of Devotion in June 2020[4] and organized a worldwide digital release via GOG.com on December 18, 2020. This deal was announced and cancelled on December 16, 2020.[5][6]

Devotion is currently available internationally via Red Candle Games' official digital store for Windows and OS X.[1]

General information

As her hunt for vengeance ranged far from the surface realm and the paths of fellow man, Tresdin acquired a helm beset with a gemstone pulled from the heart of an abyssal magma flow. Though she knows not what ill effects donning it may bring, the allure of its obvious power balances the risk on a journey likely to meet ruinous end. Devotion is a Taiwanese independent horror game developed by Red Candle Games, who also made Detention. It was initially released on Steam on February 13th, 2019, but was delisted a week and a half later following ' technical issues '. Only 1 week after released, this amazing Taiwanese horror game 《Devotion 還願》 was being removed from Steam Store on Feb 25, 2019 due to 'Crashes and other rea.

Steam Community Discussions
  1. According to PC Gamer, Devotion launched to positive fan reviews on Steam. However, the Taiwanese first-person horror game came under fire when a piece of in-game art that seemingly mocked Chinese.
  2. A popular Taiwanese horror game, Devotion, has been removed from Steam after players alleged that it contained easter eggs making reference to China’s “paramount leader” Xi Jinping, linking his name with Winnie the Pooh. Images likening Xi to the Disney interpretation of the fictional teddy bear went viral in 2017 and were quickly shut.

Devotion Steamdb

Red Candle Games, the Taiwanese studio whose first-person horror game Devotion has been unavailable to buy following controversy over a reference to Chinese premier Xi Jinping, has put its games up for sale on its own online store. Devotion and the studio’s first game Detention are available to buy now without DRM.

Devotion was pulled from Steam shortly after its launch in February 2019. The game was critically lauded for its atmosphere and originality, but drew controversy and negative user reviews after users noticed an in-game poster that read, roughly, “Xi Jinping Winnie-the-Pooh moron.” Xi is commonly compared to Winnie the Pooh in online memes, which often meet the ire of China’s online censors.

At the time, Red Candle Games said it was removing Devotion for technical and QA-related reasons, and would also “review our game material once again making sure no other unintended materials was inserted in.” The game never returned to Steam, and Red Candle Games later apologized for its “severe art material mistake.”

Devotion attracted new controversy in December 2020 when CD Projekt Red’s storefront GOG backed out from an agreement to sell the game hours after its announcement. “After receiving many messages from gamers, we have decided not to list the game in our store,” a statement from the store read. “This is a difficult predicament to overcome, but we won’t stop striving,” Red Candle Games said in response.

With the developer now selling Devotion for PC and Mac on its own terms, the game’s availability should be assured for the time being. “We hope to provide a direct and simple purchasing channel for players who’re interested in our games,” the studio says in a tweet. It’s not immediately clear whether the Xi reference has been removed.
